CMP -
Certificate Maintenance Committee

The CMP committee meets once a month.

The purpose of the meetings is as follows:
· Review of submissions and decide on awarding of CEUs
· Discuss contacts with RID
· Talk about correspondences received that month.

A copy of the RID CMP Standards and Criteria manual should be at each meeting.
Meeting dates will be published in advance in the Metro newsletter.

Committee member responsibilities:
· Distribute and receive forms
· Correspond with applicants
· Establish contact person with RID
· Guide applicants on Independent Study Plans
· Verify completion or attendance of activities

These responsibilities can be delineated as the committee deems appropriate.

Ideally, there should be one committee chair and 2 committee members. In the event this is no possible, a minimum of 2 committee members is needed to make decisions about awarding CEUs.

Types of Activities Sponsored:
1. Sponsored Activities
2. Academic Coursework
3. Participant Initiated Activities
4. Independent Studies

SPONSORED ACTIVITIES:

Sponsor Initiated Activities are developed by a sponsor and presented for group instruction or for individual study. Examples include short courses, workshops, seminars, conferences, teleconferences, and distance learning (RID CMP Standards and Criteria).

Planner of the Sponsored activity responsibilities:

1. (Metro or not) must request a Continuing Education Activity Plan Sponsor form and a Continuing Education Activity Plan Instructor form (including the instructor's resume) from the committee. Forms must be filled out and mailed to the CMP committee no later than 60 days prior to the anticipated start date of the activity. A $25 check made out to NYC Metro RID must be included for all non-Metro RID activities.

2. Planning for all phases of the event (i.e. hiring speakers, reserving space, registration, interpreters, site setup/cleanup, etc.)

3. Appoint a person to act as liaison to the Metro CMP Committee.

4. The liaison will be responsible to ensure that promotion, conduct, and evaluation of the activity conforms to the standards and criteria set forth by RID.

5. The liaison will collect signatures of certified members wishing to earn CEUs and distribute and collect evaluation forms. These forms must be mailed to the CMP committee within 14 days of the completion of the activity.

Committee responsibilities:

1. Based on the information supplied, the CMP committee will judge the content area, educational level, and number of CEUs to be awarded

2. Provide the liaison with
· RID CMP and /or ACET logo for use in advertising
· Instructions for required information to be printed in any publicity. ALL publicity must be approved by the Metro CMP committee prior to distribution.
· Participant attendance verification forms
· Program evaluation forms

3. Complete the Activity Report form, make a copy for the files and forward the originals along with a summary of the evaluations and/or the actual program evaluation forms to RID for participant CEU credit 45 days after the completion of the event.

4. Mail or email certificates of attendance to certified participants at the conclusion of the activity

ACADEMIC COURSEWORK:

CEUs may be awarded for Academic Coursework taken from an accredited institution during the participants' current cycle. Successful completion is defined as receiving a minimum letter grade of "C" (2.0) or above. Academic Coursework Activity Plan/Report is processed by the Sponsor and forwarded to the National Office. If the participant is auditing the course or taking it through the continuing education office of the institution, valid documentation of completion is required.

Academic coursework CEUs will be awarded based on the following formula:

Institutions following the quarter system-one credit hour equals 10 contact hours, which equals one CEU. Therefore, a 3-credit course would earn 3 CEUs.

Institutions following a semester system-one credit hour equals 15 contact hours, which equals 1.5 CEUs. Therefore, a 3-credit course would earn 4.5 CEUs (RID CMP Standards and Criteria).

Interpreter responsibilities:

1. Request an Academic Coursework Activity Plan and Report for the CMP committee

2. Complete section one of the above form and send it along with the following to the Metro CMP committee at least 60 days prior to the start of the class.
· A printed course description (copied from the course catalog)
· A documentation of the institution's accreditation (copied from the course catalog)
· Content area in which the participant wishes to be awarded CEUs
· A non-refundable $10 processing fee for Metro members and $25 for non-Metro members (made to NYC Metro RID)

3. Upon successful completion of the class, the participant must mail documentation of final grade of "C" or above (or Pass if taken Pass/Fail) to the committee. The committee must receive this documentation within 3 weeks of completing the activity.

Committee Responsibilities:

1. Prior to the start of the class, the CMP committee will notify the participant in writing of the anticipated number of CEUs and the Content Area.

2. The committee will complete Section 2 of the Academic Coursework Report. Copies of the completed paperwork will be filed with the committee and mailed to the participant. Originals will be forwarded to RID for CEU credit within 45 days of completion of the activity.

3. A certificate of completion will be sent to the participant.

4. RID policy prohibits any Sponsor from awarding CEUs retroactively. IF a participant has already begun a class s/he must follow procedures for an Independent Study. CEUs may only be granted for the portion of the class that occurs AFTER the Independent Study is APPROVED.

INDEPENDENT STUDY ACTIVITIES

The participant plans Independent Study activities with input from the Sponsor. The Independent Study Sponsor monitors and approves independent study projects. Examples include research, initial curriculum development, study groups, independent reading, mentoring, and preparation of scientific/clinical materials for publication. Participants must apply for approval from a Sponsor prior to commencement of the activity (RID CMP Standards and Criteria).

Interpreter responsibilities:

1. Request an Independent Study Plan packet from the Committee. The packet includes: Instructions for Independent Study Plan and the Independent Study Plan.

2. The Independent Study Plan packet should be completed and mailed to the Metro CMP Committee at least 60 days prior to the proposed start date of the activity.

3. Once the committee has made the decision the interpreter will be notified. If the Plan is approved, the letter will state the number of CEUs granted and the content area. The interpreter will be asked to return a check for $25 made out to NYC Metro RID. If the work is deemed unsatisfactory, for awarding CEUs a letter to that effect will be sent to the participant and the RID Professional Development committee. The participant has the right to appeal the decision to the PDC. Appeal must be filed within 45 days.

4. When the Independent Study is complete the applicant will submit all necessary documentation to the Metro CMP committee. IS Plans have a one-year time limit.

5. Participants are urged to make copies of all their materials for their personal files.

CMP Committee responsibilities:

1. Committee will review the plan (perhaps in consultation with an expert in the area of the plan). They will determine the number of CEUs to be earned and the Content Area. These decisions along with any possible requests for revision to the plan will be mailed to the applicant. If necessary, the committee will confer and clarify issues with the applicant. They will assess the Plan Outcomes. If all the goals of a particular IS have not been reached, it is possible to be granted less CEUs than originally estimated.

2. Within 45 days of the completion of the IS Plan, the committee will complete the Independent Study Plan Activity Report form, file a copy with the committee and forward the original to RID.

3. The committee will mail or email a certificate of completion to the participant.

PARTICIPANT INITIATED NON-RID ACTIVITIES (PINRA)

PINRAs are activities an interpreter/transliterator wishes to attend but are not directly offered by a Sponsor. The activity must be sponsored by an organization with specific known standards, and must have a specific format, educational objectives and purpose.

A primary example of a PINRA is a Continuing Education activity not sponsored by a professional organization or institution that is an RID approved sponsor. Administrative paperwork is processed by the Sponsor and forwarded to the National Office. Participants must apply for approval from a Sponsor prior to the commencement of the activity (RID CMP Standards and Criteria).

Interpreter responsibilities:

1. Request a PINRA form and Instructions for a PINRA form from the CMP committee.

2. Complete Section 1 and mail the PINRA form, a copy of the activity/conference documentation and a non-refundable processing fee ($10 for Metro members and $25 for non-Metro members) made to NYC Metro RID to the CMP committee 60 days prior to the activity start date.

3. Upon completion of the activity the interpreter must present documentation the activity was completed within 14 days.

Committee responsibilities:

1. Prior to the start of the activity, the CMP committee will notify the participant in writing of the anticipated number of CEUs and the Content Area.

2. Complete section 2 of PINRA form prior to the event

3. Upon completion the committee completes section 3 of the PINRA, and send the original form to RID with relevant documentation within 45 days. A copy is kept on file for the committee records.

Misc. Information
· Independent Study CEUs are not always awarded on a 1:1 ratio. Metro has generally awarded research and writing on a 3:1 ratio basis.

· Sign Enhancers IS - We don't have to send the written test or the videotapes to National although they seem to expect us to keep them (i.e. for audits).

· Send memo to RID about late IS and keep copy for file.

· Host of workshop decides about partial credit for workshops

· Evaluation forms are used to check of a person complains about a particular sponsor or for auditing purposes. They are really to monitor the sponsor not the presenter. Comments about the presenter may of course be shown to the presenter.

· National no longer wants the evaluations from various workshops. They instead want a survey (i.e. # of participants, # of strongly agree, agree or strongly disagree. They want it expressed in percent.

· January - every year RID sends a renewal of status.
