Workshop Description: Explore various business practices associated with being a professional sign language interpreter. Although interpreters often demonstrate expertise regarding the bicultural-bilingual aspects of their work, many are unfamiliar with the business aspects of the profession and face challenges in this area. The presenter will discuss and share useful information regarding billing, ethics, self-promotion, phone skills, and other business tools to help you build and run your business.
Kathleen D. Taylor has an MA degree from New York University in Rehabilitation Counseling, specializing in Deafness. She is a Nationally Certified interpreter; former President of the NYC Chapter and former Eastern Regional Representative of the National Alliance of Black Interpreters; and a former board member of NYC Metro Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID). She has worked as a professional freelance sign language interpreter for 17 years, while working in the field of deafness 20+ years. As an interpreter she has worked with noted political, religious and social personalities; interpreted on/off Broadway; and was one of the original class members of the theatrical interpreting program at The Julliard School.

As interpreters do we really know what the Deaf “theatre goers” really want to see from the interpreter? This will be your opportunity to find out. There will be a panel of Deaf consumers who regularly attend the theatre available to discuss their experience. What they like, what they do not like. What makes sense and what does not. This will be a golden opportunity to ask them: What do they watch? What irks them about interpreters and theatre? What do they experience watching a show interpreted by one interpreter only? What is the impact on the Deaf audience? Does the dialectical nature of ASL work with a solo interpreter? This is the time to stop wondering and start asking.
The first 1.5 hours will be a discussion format. The second 1.5 hours the participants will do “hands up” work applying what was learned from the discussion to theatrical source text. Working with a DVD from a theatre piece, participants will identify key issues of interpreting for the theatre, such as meaning as opposed to the words. How do people get into situations? How relationships are shown in ASL and how that works for interpreted theatre. The participants will wrap up with a discussion of what they learned.

Sorenson VRS is proud to sponsor the workshop donating all proceeds to NJRID.
NAOBI Conference
"Embracing the History... Empowering the Future"
Sheraton Braintree Hotel (suburb of Boston), MA.
June 19-22, 2008.
Conference presenters will offer business strategies and skill enhancement techniques for professional certified interpreters, pre-certified interpreters and ASL/ITP students. The daytime hours will be packed with choices of workshops benefitting attendees of various experience levels. Each evening offers a fun activity and an opportunity to network with interpreters, members of the Deaf community, and vendors.
Fitting with the mission statement, the NAOBI, Inc. conference is unabashedly tailored to support the needs of interpreters of color. However, NAOBI's partners and their constituents are more than welcome to attend; previous attendees have experienced a comfortable and supportive learning environment that resulted in increased knowledge in both general interpreting and cultural aspects.
See www.naobi.org/2008 for information on registration, becoming a presenter, vendor, student representative and for donating to the silent auction.
Should you have questions, please contact Dr. Rodney Smith, Conference Chair: conf_chair@naobi.org (330)244-9327.
