There has been a significant shift in ethical expectations in the field of interpreting from a deontological, or a rule-based approach to a more teleological, or goal and consequences-based approach. We are no longer limited to solely relying on rules which tell us what to think ethically but how to think ethically. We have learned to make ethical decisions through trial and error and now make most of our ethical decisions intuitively. However, in analyses and discussions with colleagues, it is hard to explain these intuitive decisions.
In this ten-hour workshop, participants are provided with a basic review of the constructs of demand-control schema (DC-S). The majority of time and attention will focus on the application of DC-S to our work. Instead of the 'it depends' answer, this type of analysis provides practitioners, mentors, and teachers with a new structure which can be used to analyze our work more thoroughly. It can also be used as a framework in discussions with colleagues, mentees, or students. Attendees will learn how to use this framework when discussing complex assignments with peers.
This workshop will show practitioners, mentors and teachers how to translate their intuition into practical and useable language. This provides the constructs to evaluate our work and the ability to impart our reasoning to mentees and students. Participants who have attended an introduction to DC-S course can choose to forego the Friday session. Since it is expected that participants will be ready to put the skills into immediate practice for the Saturday session, a brief competency assessment will be requested by the PD Committee.
