Course description:
This workshop, presented in ASL provides an overview of medical interpreting for Deaf and hearing teams. This includes definitions of common medical conditions and treatments, a walkthrough of a medical visit from start to finish, cultural understanding and differences between Deaf patient narrative and medical information gathering, and hands up opportunity for team interpreting and role play in breakout rooms.

Course objectives:

Interpreters will define common medical treatments and conditions in English and in ASL;

Interpreters will practice team interpreting in mock medical scenarios utilizing best practices;

Interpreters will discuss and consider cultural differences in information gathering in medical situations.


Presenter bio:
Marina Fanshteyn, MBA, is the Director of Development and Operations at United Hands Organization, specializing in healthcare services for the Deaf and Deafblind. With over 20 years of training and expertise in healthcare she is dedicated to improving access and training to interpreters in this field. She oversees numerous programs and services, including the Deaf Wellness and Recreation Center (DWRC) in Brooklyn, an adult day care center for the Deaf. A grandmother of two, Marina also enjoys watching Korean movies in her spare time.
